Who Owns GMC?

2026 GMC Sierra 1500 Parked In Grass

If you’re searching for a powerful pickup or a spacious SUV to tackle your Fairfield travels, there’s nothing like the GMC lineup. Offering popular models like the Sierra and the Yukon, many West Chester drivers consider GMC a top brand for their next vehicle. But before committing to your next model, you may wonder who owns GMC and where GMC vehicles are made.

General Motors (GM) owns GMC (General Motors Truck Company). GMC is one of GM’s many subsidiaries, which includes Chevrolet, Buick, Cadillac, and more. Learn more about the GMC brand, manufacturing plants, and history with this guide from Tom Gill Buick GMC.

History Of The General Motors Truck Company

We know that General Motors owns GMC, but how did the brand end up under the GM umbrella? Take a brief look at the history of GMC here:

  • Max and Morris Grabowsky founded the Grabowsky Motor Company in 1900, which was renamed to the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1902. During this time, the brothers established an assembly plant in Pontiac, Michigan, to build their first vehicle.
  • General Motors acquired Rapid Motor in 1909, making it a subsidiary. By 1911, General Motors formed the General Motors Truck Company by folding Rapid Motor and another acquired manufacturer, Reliance Motor, into one. By 1912, the original Rapid and Reliance names were dropped, replaced with GMC.
  • In 1920, General Motors began using the same platforms for both Chevrolet and GMC trucks. While their body sheetwork was the same, their engine options, nameplates, and grilles remained unique.
  • During WWII, the company became a crucial provider to the U.S. Military and manufactured over 600,000 trucks for its use.
  • Today, GMC is a global brand offering premium trucks and SUVs worldwide.

Where Is GMC Made?

While GMC has its headquarters in Detroit, Michigan, its vehicles are assembled all over the country. Some GMC assembly plants include:

  • Arlington, Texas: Produces full-size SUVs like the GMC Yukon
  • Flint, Michigan: Assembles heavy-duty trucks like the GMC Sierra HD lineup
  • Lansing, Michigan: Produces the GMC Acadia
  • Orion Township, Michigan: The first assembly plant fully converted to EV production
  • Roanoke, Indiana: Produces the GMC Sierra 1500
  • Spring Hill, Tennessee: Produces the engines used in GMC trucks and SUVs
  • Wentzville, Missouri: Assembles the GMC Canyon
